If you drive south down College and take a left at University Avenue, just a few houses down and on your left live Brian and Kathy Slind.

They’d love to have you over for brunch sometime.

How does made to order omelets with English muffins, homemade jam and coffee sound? Better yet, I’ll take some Apple Crisp followed with Spinach & Feta Quiche, ham steaks, and buttermilk biscuits. For nearly eight years, the Slinds have been making the types of meals the rest of us dream of waking up to at the oldest B&B in town – University Avenue Bed and Breakfast at 1315 University Avenue.

Brian and Kathy of University Avenue Bed and Breakfast have been Nate’s Computer Repair clients for just over a year.

The bed and breakfast is housed in a beautiful brick home, built in the early nineteen hundreds, and accommodates Columbia visitors all year long. Until last month, guests of the B&B received their entertainment via good ‘ol rabbit ears antennas. No doubt, the innkeepers have been looking forward to upgrading their entertainment amenities. “We knew, as travelers ourselves, that this was not a very accommodating amenity and wanted to provide our guests with a wide selection of programs to watch.”

So, Brain arranged for the Nate’s Computer Repair team to install new flat screen televisions in each of the four guest rooms.

Client Profile | University Avenue Bed & BreakfastI joined Nate on a follow up visit to hide some unsightly exposed wires left by the satellite company after one of the set box installations. It was one of the last brisk, sunny days of fall and the natural light filling the space was refreshing. While Nate went straight to work assessing the situation and gathering the appropriate supplies, I was able to visit with Brian. I was delighted by his passion for offering an outstanding experience to his guests and impressed with his marketing savvy and leadership in the B&B community. He doesn’t seem to miss a day of posting the latest breakfast adventure on the B&B’s Facebook and Google Plus pages which also serve as a great online resource for visitors (and locals) on events and happenings around the city.

As we continued our conversation, the bright light and juxtaposition of modern technology against the roaring 1920’s era architecture was a lovely backdrop for snapping a few photos on this ride-a-long. Nate began to wrap up the finishing touches of the installation and he and Brian discussed future technological upgrades to better suit guests of the B&B. While they will surely enjoy boasting what is “hands down one of the biggest amenities that a Bed and Breakfast can offer,” the Slinds already have plans to increase internet download speeds and install wireless receivers on the newly installed televisions. These upgrades will allow guests to take advantage of the online movie streaming capabilities of Hulu and Netflix right from the TVs themselves.

One of the most fulfilling aspects of our business is the opportunity to help our clients use technology as a tool for improving the function – and fun! – of their daily lives.

It was a pleasure to learn a little bit more about Brian and the University Avenue Bed and Breakfast and to see tradition meet technology at (what Brian proudly asserts is) “the best Bed and Breakfast in Columbia.” Maybe next time I’ll have the guys schedule Nate’s visit during breakfast time so I can sneak in a taste of that Peach and Blueberry Cobbler for myself.

The Slinds are currently researching the history of their historic property. If you have any details dating back to the 1920s-1980s, they would be delighted to hear from you.
